 Proverbs 6:16 – 19

Introduction: Today is the last message on Looking Back to Look Ahead and it covers our Christian Duties to Avoid The Things God Hates. In previous messages we looked at our duties towards other people in general, duties between you and God, duties for sanctification, and our duties towards the brethren. So, let us finish Looking Back To Look Ahead.

  1. Avoid A Prideful Look: (Proverbs 6:17a)
    1. No one is better than anyone else.
    2. The Devil tried exalting himself and is suffering for that decision. (Isaiah 14:12 – 15)
  2. Avoid A Lying Tongue: (Proverbs 6:17b)
    1. Liars have been warned that they will not have a place in God’s house. (Psalm 101:7)
    2. We can pray to be delivered from liars. (Psalm 120:2)
  3. Avoid Shedding Innocent Blood: (Proverbs 6:17c) 
(Romans 3:15)
  4. Avoid A Wickedly Imaginative Heart: (Proverbs 6:18a)
    1. This is a problem that has been around since before Noah’s day. (Genesis 6:5; 8)
    2. Jesus dealt with it when he was here on earth. 
(Matthew 9:4; 15:19)
    3. It is a problem that we need to deal with today. (Philippians 4:8) (Proverbs 4:23) (Matthew 12:34)
  5. Avoid Running To Mischief: (Proverbs 6:18b)
    1. They don’t walk, they run to do evil. (Isaiah 5:7 – 8)
    2. Sadly, those that don’t avoid it tend to take someone with them. (Proverbs 4:16)
  6. Avoid A False Witness: (Proverbs 6:19a)
    a. Everyone has been warned. (Exodus 20:16; 23:1)

b. The combatting of a false witness is having true witnesses. (Hebrews 10:28)

VII. Avoid Sowing Discord Among The Brethren: (Proverbs 6:19b)

a. We see what happens to the individual that does this. (Proverbs 6:14 – 15)

b. We also see what happens to those that sow spiritual seeds of righteousness. (Galatians 6:8)
